The house is the former residence of Harry E. Pierce. Pierce served as County Assessor during the 1920s, was secretary to Governor John C. Phillips from 1929 until 1932, and was chairperson of the Maricopa County Republican Central Committee. In addition to his political activities, Pierce was a partner in the real estate firm of Jacobs & Pierce.
In the late 1980s, UDC established a reputation in the Phoenix high-end "move-up" market for homes that backed onto golf courses, artificial lakes, and mountains. [12] It was the second-largest homebuilder in Phoenix in the early 1990s, with 1,654 permits in 1994 alone; that year, it was the ninth-largest homebuilder in the country. [13]
The fort was near the Salt River and as such allowed the settlement of a small agricultural community called "Hayden's Ferry," named after a ferry service operated by Charles T. Hayden. The community's name was changed to "Tempe" after pioneer Darrell "Lord" Duppa compared the Salt River valley to the Vale of Tempe near Mount Olympus in Greece. [2]
