The BCHL franchise was founded as the Richmond Sockeyes in 1972 in the Pacific Junior A Hockey League. In 1990, Sockeyes dropped to the junior B level and sold the junior A franchise to become the Chilliwack Chiefs. In 2006, the Chilliwack Bruins of the Western Hockey League were founded and the Chiefs moved to become the Langley Chiefs.

In the 2005 Doyle Cup series, they lost to Camrose Kodiaks four games to one. In 2012–13, the Eagles won the British Columbia Hockey League championship by defeating the Penticton Vees in six games. They then won the inaugural Western Canada Cup with a 4–2 win over the Brooks Bandits in the championship game.

The Richmond Renegades were a professional ice hockey team in Richmond, Virginia that played in the East Coast Hockey League from 1990 until 2003. The Renegades played at the Richmond Coliseum, which they marketed in later years as the Freezer. The Renegades folded in 2003, but were succeeded by the Richmond RiverDogs of the United Hockey League.
