I think the Sound effect article should be split into two articles: Sound effects and Audio effects. Typically, the term "sound effect" is used to refer to a recording (for example, applause, slide whistle, etc.), while the term "audio effect" is used to refer to a process (flanging, chorus, reverb, etc.) which is applied to an audio signal.
