Drawing from a large repertoire of designs, barn painters combined many elements in their decorations. The geometric patterns of quilts can be seen in the patterns of many hex signs. Hearts and tulips seen on barns are commonly found on elaborately lettered and decorated birth, baptism, and marriage certificates known as fraktur. [4]

Pennsylvania Dutch hex signs are a familiar type of motif in the eastern portions of the United States. Their circular and symmetric design, and their use of brightly colored patterns from nature, such as stars, compass roses, doves, hearts, tulips, leaves, and feathers have made them quite popular.
Macleod has explored topics of folklore traditions in Hex series (2009). [1] Exhibited at the Catriona Jeffries gallery in Vancouver, British Columbia in 2009, and in Myfanwy MacLeod, or There And Back Again in 2013 and 2014, Hex Series is a collection of hand painted signs based on patterns found in Dutch culture in Eastern Pennsylvania. [31]
