This is a list of reggae musicians. This includes artists who have either been critical to the genre or have had a considerable amount of exposure (such as in the case of one that has been on a major label). Bands are listed by the first letter in their name (not including the words "a", "an", or "the"), and individuals are listed by last name.
According to a 2012 profile in Now magazine, Douglas' first Canadian performances were at Toronto's Central Technical School, when he was a student there. His first professional group was The Cougars, a funk band. [1] Since then, Douglas has performed steadily at clubs and festivals all over Ontario.
Frederick Nathaniel "Toots" Hibbert, OJ (8 December 1942 – 11 September 2020) [2] was a Jamaican singer and songwriter who was the lead vocalist for the reggae and ska band Toots and the Maytals. A reggae pioneer, he performed for six decades and helped establish some of the fundamentals of reggae music.
He first toured the UK in 1972 with the artists Roy Shirley and Max Romeo. [11] The tour was organized by Rita and Benny King, the owners of R & B Records based in Stamford Hill, London. [12] U-Roy's album Dread In A Babylon was released in the US, Europe and Jamaica by Virgin Records in 1975. [13]
In 2015, Vogue Magazine listed Royal as part of a greater on-going "Reggae Revival" movement (along with other reggae artists Chronixx, Jah9 and Protoje) happening in Jamaica and the rest of the world, revitalizing the genre of roots reggae. [9] In 2016, Royal was featured on the Raging Fyah album, Everlasting in a song titled "Humble".
He was the first to record a song with the word REGGAE with producer Prince Buster who named him Little Roy. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] He had his first number one hit with "Bongo Nyah" (1969)at the age of 16 years for Lloyd Daley ("the Matador"), the first song about the Rastafari movement to be successful commercially in Jamaica. [ 1 ]
Alpha And Omega are a roots dub duo that mix both analogue and digital elements, comprising bassist Christine Woodbridge and keyboard player John Sprosen, both of whom had played in reggae bands previously, Sprosen also having worked with the Roaring Lion Sound System.
