The 2024 California wildfire season is an ongoing series of wildfires that have been burning throughout the U.S. state of California. As of December 13, 2024 [update] , a total of 7,934 wildfires have burned a cumulative 1,049,452 acres (424,698 ha).
The firefighting effort was primarily administered by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire). [1] The first fires started around 3:30 A.M. on August 16, 2020, the result of a thunderstorm that produced close to 11,000 bolts of lightning and started hundreds of fires throughout California.
Comprising the Castle and Shotgun fires, it affected Sequoia National Forest and adjacent areas. Both fires began on August 19, 2020, and burned a combined total of 175,019 acres (70,828 hectares) before the complex as a whole was declared 100 percent contained on January 6, 2021. In the course of the fires, 232 structures were destroyed.

The Slater and Devil fires were two fires that burned in Northern California and Southern Oregon during the 2020 California wildfire season. The fires burned 166,127 acres (67,229 ha), claimed two lives, injured 12 people, and were 100% contained on November 16. [1] [2] The fires caused some highway reconstructions and forest closures.
