Maternal death or maternal mortality is defined in slightly different ways by several different health organizations. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines maternal death as the death of a pregnant mother due to complications related to pregnancy, underlying conditions worsened by the pregnancy or management of these conditions.
Anemia prevalences during pregnancy differed from 18% in developed countries to 75% in South Asia; culminating to a global rate of 38% of pregnancies worldwide. [1] [5] [32] Treatment varies due to the severity of the anaemia, and can be used by increasing iron containing foods, oral iron tablets or by the use of parenteral iron. [13]
If the curvature of the universe is hyperbolic or flat, or if dark energy is a positive cosmological constant, the universe will continue expanding forever, and a heat death is expected to occur, [3] with the universe cooling to approach equilibrium at a very low temperature after a long time period.
From 1999-2023, the Journal of American Medical Association recorded 21,518 deaths where heat was either the underlying cause or the contributing cause of death, likely an underestimation, they say.
[1] [14] Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are one of the most common causes of death in pregnancy. [14] They resulted in 46,900 deaths in 2015. [ 6 ] Maternal mortality due to eclampsia occurs at a rate of approximately 0–1.8% of cases in high-income countries and up to 15% of cases in low- to middle- income countries. [ 15 ]
Pain in childbirth also serves to protect the child and the mother during the childbirth process. Pain has some function roles to warn the body of potential danger or to the presence of injury. In the case of pregnancy, it can help the pregnant individual to detect any danger to the child, as well as adjusting to an optimal position for childbirth.
When extreme temperature elevation occurs, it becomes a medical emergency requiring immediate treatment to prevent disability or death. [citation needed] Almost half a million deaths are recorded every year from hyperthermia. [citation needed] The most common causes include heat stroke and adverse reactions to drugs.
Preterm birth is the most common cause of perinatal mortality, causing almost 30 percent of neonatal deaths. [7] Infant respiratory distress syndrome, in turn, is the leading cause of death in preterm infants, affecting about 1% of newborn infants. [8] Birth defects cause about 21 percent of neonatal death.
