A novena (from Latin: novem, "nine") is an ancient tradition of devotional praying in Christianity, consisting of private or public prayers repeated for nine successive days or weeks. [1]
The novena will normally include a visit to a Jesuit church or chapel. The novena ends on 12 March which is the date of the canonisation of St Francis Xavier and St Ignatius. [6] The novena can also be held from 25 November to 3 December (St Francis Xavier’s feast day). [7] However, it can be carried out at any time of the year.
It is used daily to pray the canonical hours at fixed prayer times. [2] It is bound in four volumes and follows the lectionary of the Lutheran Book of Worship.
