The concept of an inverted roller coaster with inversions was developed by Jim Wintrode, the general manager of Six Flags Great America, in the early 1990s. [5] [6] To develop the idea for the park, Wintrode worked with Walter Bolliger and Claude Mabillard – from Swiss roller coaster manufacturer Bolliger & Mabillard – and engineer Robert Mampe. [5]
Batman The Escape was a steel stand-up roller coaster at Six Flags AstroWorld. Originally, the queue was located inside the Batcave, but the entrance was moved in 1998. Formerly, the coaster operated as "Shockwave" at Six Flags Magic Mountain from 1986 to 1988 and Six Flags Great Adventure from 1990 to 1992.

In 2008, the ride's name was changed to Batman: The Ride to avoid confusion with Six Flags New England's installation of The Dark Knight Coaster that was planned to be built at the park, but after the project was cancelled, the ride's name reverted to Batman: The Dark Knight.
