Gems TV is a British reverse auction jewellery shopping channel, officially the first reverse auction in the UK [citation needed] and was known as the first British channel just to sell gemstones. [4] Gems TV first launched at 4 pm on 8 October 2004, after the channel was formed by Steve Bennett and founders of Eagle Road Studios and Thaigems.
For example, if 50 items were available, then the top 50 bidders would win the auction. In August 2004, the channel had an "Auction Choice" month, during which they featured both rising and falling price auction hours. The falling price auctions continued after this month and are now the only common auction format on the channel.
The channel first launched as Price-Drop.TV on 11 June 2003. The channel began broadcasting from 4pm to 12 midnight, Wednesdays to Saturdays. The hours of live broadcast were then extended to 7.45am to 1.30am, 7 days a week. It was available to more than 12 million homes in the UK, and made weekly revenue of over £3 million. The channel holds themed days such as 'Tanzanite Day'. It also holds discount days where it reduces the final auction prices by 10% or 17.5% (the latter the equivalent to the UK 17.5% VAT charge), or Under £20 or £10 days. The firm launched an additional channel, TJC Gold, in October 2012 to offer more expensive gold and platinum collections.
