The Society was formally registered with the California Secretary of State on August 30, 1963. [3] The SCHS was organized "to collect and preserve journals, manuscripts, maps, diaries, portraits, genealogies and other articles or materials which establish the history of California, particularly Sonoma County."
The house received a Preservation Award from the Western Sonoma County Historical Society in 1977. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. [1] It has also been known as the Strout House and the Kimball House. [2]

In July 2018, the Mt. Lion Observatory was opened on the grounds of the fort as a joint venture between the Fort Roberdeau Association and Neil Armstrong Planetarium at Altoona Area High School. [4] The site is open May 1 through October 31, and the Observatory hosts public and private groups throughout the year.
The SCHS since 1946 has worked to preserve and promote the history of Shawnee County. Members are inviting the public to join that organization, with $40 being the cost for annual dues for 2025.
