Location of Oahu. This is a list of properties and districts on the Hawaiian island of Oahu that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Oahu is the only major island in Honolulu County. The location of the city of Honolulu, Oahu is the most populous island in the state.
The current park was the site of Pualeilani, the home of Prince Kūhiō and his wife, Princess Elizabeth Kahanu. In July 1918, the prince removed a high board fence, opening a section of the beach to the public. The property was given to the city after his death in 1922, and Kuhio Beach Park was officially dedicated in 1940. [2]
After the founding of the Kingdom of Hawaii, Waikīkī was its first capital, 1795–1796. In the 1800s, the area was a retreat for Hawaiian royalty, who enjoyed surfing there on early forms of longboards. [7] A few small hotels opened in the 1880s.
The hotel opened at Waikiki beach on October 25, 1975, with a traditional Hawaiian ceremony. A major expansion came in 1991. The hotel added a new pool, a beverage bar, and a luau garden. Later, the Maile tower was built across the lobby from the Ilima tower, bringing the total number of rooms to 818.
In 1967, the Outrigger Waikiki On The Beach hotel opened, the first to carry the Outrigger name. During the 1970s, Outrigger grew into a chain of Hawaiian hotels. In 1982, the company purchased the Prince Kuhio Hotel, its first luxury property. By 1986, Outrigger became the largest hotel chain in Hawaii when its room count reached over 7,000.
