Jim Sharp, nicknamed "The Razor", was born in Kermit, Texas, to a rodeo family in 1965.He is of British descent. Sharp's father, James Sharp, was a calf roper.Sharp rode his first steer in 1974 at the age of nine in Pecos, Texas, while competing in an American Junior Rodeo Association event.
It began in 1947 as a single organization in Texas (National Championship High School Rodeo Association), and has grown to include local organizations in most U.S. states and in Canada, Mexico, Australia, and New Zealand. It has over 12,000 members and sanctions over 1,800 rodeos every year.
In high school, he finished in first place in the 1965 Texas Youth Rodeo Association finals, and was second in the National High School Rodeo all-around standings, winning the national high school title in the tie-down roping event.
