Air India Flight 182 was a passenger flight operating on the Montreal–London–Delhi–Mumbai route, that on 23 June 1985, disintegrated over the Atlantic Ocean as a result of an explosion from a bomb allegedly planted by Canadian Sikh terrorists.
Air India is the flag carrier of India, and was founded by JRD Tata of Tata Sons. It is based in New Delhi, and currently operates hubs in Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, with various focus cities across India. [1] Air India commenced operations on 29 July 1946, operating under the Government of India.
In May 2005, Air India commenced service to Toronto via Birmingham using Boeing 777s. [ 14 ] [ 15 ] The stopover changed to London's Heathrow Airport three years later. [ 16 ] In October 2010, the carrier replaced the route with a direct flight from its Delhi hub to Toronto.
As of 2024, Air Canada operates non-stop flights from Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver to Delhi, and from Toronto to Mumbai. [ 69 ] [ 70 ] In September 2019, Air India resumed its non-stop flights from Delhi to Toronto, and began scheduled flights from Delhi to Vancouver in October 2020. [ 71 ]

Air India became the first Asian airline to operate freighters when Air India Cargo was set up in 1954 and started its freighter operations with a Douglas DC-3 aircraft. [16] Air India Cargo ended freighter aircraft operations in early 2012. [124] Alliance Air was a wholly owned subsidiary of Indian Airlines established on 1 April 1996.
