Holland State Park is a public recreation area covering 142 acres (57 ha) in Park Township, Ottawa County, four miles (6 km) west of the city of Holland, Michigan. [2] The state park consists of separate Lake Macatawa and Lake Michigan units on the northern side of the channel connecting Lake Macatawa with Lake Michigan. [ 2 ]
[1] [11] When both buildings were initially constructed, the hotel sat 20 feet (6.1 m) from Lake Michigan. [12] The 1933 extension of Lake Shore Drive north to Foster Avenue resulted in the creation of a private bathing beach east of the hotel and north of Foster along the Lake Michigan shore. [11] [13]
By midcentury, much leisure shifted to Lake Michigan. The first City of Chicago Public Beach opened in Lincoln Park in 1895. [2] Today, the entire 28 miles (45 km) Chicago lakefront shoreline is reclaimed land, and primarily used for public parks. [3] In the parks, there are 24 sand beaches along the shores of freshwater Lake Michigan. [4]
The railroad sold the hotel and resort property in 1913 to J. Boyd Pantlind. [4] The hotel burned in 1923, and was not rebuilt. In 1925, Pantlind sold the beach resort property to the state of Michigan, which turned it into the Holland State Park. Most of the remainder of the cottages in the district were completed in the 1910s and 1920s.
This white-washed resort-style hotel, overlooking the northern end of Lake Windermere, is a stalwart of the Lake District hotel scene, though much-expanded (130 rooms) and glossied-up in recent years.
The Lakeside Inn is a 2-1/2 story, broad fronted, side gabled wood frame structure sited on a low rise overlooking Lake Michigan. It is covered with clapboard. A pair of cross gables face the lake, as does an open shed-roof veranda which extends across the entire facade. Shed roof dormers penetrate the roof.
