Washtenaw County (/ ˈ w ɔː ʃ t ə n ɔː / WAWSH-tə-naw) is a county located in the U.S. state of Michigan. At the 2020 census , the population was 372,258. [ 3 ] The county seat and largest city is Ann Arbor . [ 4 ]
A post office opened on August 29, 1827 and later became the name of the township, which was established in 1834. The community was also known as Lodi Plains and was named after Lodi in the Finger Lakes region of New York, from which many early settlers originated. The post office closed on February 3, 1856. [4]
York Charter Township is a charter township of Washtenaw County in the U.S. state of Michigan.The population was 9,108 at the 2020 census. [3]The township is located north of the city of Milan and is home to the Federal Correctional Institution, Milan, which carried out the only capital punishment sentence in the state's history when Tony Chebatoris was executed in 1938.
The community was settled by the Pebbles family who moved to Salem Township in 1831. It was given a stage post office named Pebbles Corner in 1838. The post office was renamed as Worden on March 7, 1882. It became a station along the Toledo, Ann Arbor & Northern Michigan Railroad. The Worden post office operated until January 31, 1902. [9]
Manchester Township is a civil township of Washtenaw County in the U.S. state of Michigan.The population was 4,626 at the 2020 census, although the population is less now after the village of Manchester, which was within the boundaries of the township, incorporated as an autonomous city in 2023.
The post office opened on May 7, 1834. The post office closed occasionally and underwent several name changes, including Nelsonville, Readingville, and ultimately Oakville until it closed permanently on February 19, 1904. The community of Readingville is historically listed as being in Washtenaw County, while Oakville is in Monroe County. [8] [9]
