Antigua and Barbuda consists of two major inhabited islands, Antigua and Barbuda, and a number of smaller islands (including Great Bird, Green, Guinea, Long, Maiden and York Islands).
TAA also offers sightseeing flights to neighbouring islands. TAA also have scheduled daily flights from Anguilla to islands such as, St Kitts, Nevis and Antigua. The first planes that landed in Antigua and Barbuda were seaplanes that transported passengers in and out of St. John's Harbour. Villa Airstrip was later established, with a small terminal in the community now known as Old Runway. The first commercial flight landed at the airstrip in March 1943. [1]
Antigua Air Station was established on a portion of the former Coolidge AFB. As of 2011, NASA continues to utilize the Antigua facility for launch tracking services on an as-needed basis; and did so for the launch of the Mars Science Laboratory on 26 November 2011. [4] Upon the closure of the base in 1949, it became a civil airport.

[5] [6] [7] On 12 September 2024, the Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda announced that the airport would be named after Eric Burton and Arthur Nibbs. [8] The name was chosen due to Burton and Nibbs' stance in favor of a unitary Antigua and Barbuda, and due to Nibbs' stance against the Barbuda Land Acts . [ 9 ]
