Black Point is an estate on the south shore of Geneva Lake in Wisconsin, United States, built in 1888 as a summer home by Conrad Seipp, a beer tycoon from Chicago. [2] It has also been known as Conrad and Catherine Seipp Summer House and as Die Loreley [1]
In 1954, Lake Geneva was one of the three finalists for the location of the new United States Air Force Academy, but lost to Colorado Springs, Colorado. [11] In 1968, Hugh Hefner built his first Playboy resort in Lake Geneva. [12] It closed in 1981 and was converted in 1982 to the Americana Resort, and in 1993 to the Grand Geneva Resort. [13] [14]
On its shores are the city of Lake Geneva and the villages of Fontana-on-Geneva-Lake and Williams Bay. The lake covers an area of approximately 5,401 acres (2,186 ha ; 8.439 sq mi ; 21.86 km 2 ), [ 3 ] with a maximum length of 7.8 miles (12.6 km), [ 3 ] a mean depth of 61 feet (19 m), [ 3 ] and a maximum depth of 135 feet (41 m). Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, emerged as a resort town in the 1870s, popularized by images of its side-wheeler steamboats. The lakeshore at Broad Street became the main water transportation hub with the construction of the Whiting House Hotel; the train station was located approximately .5 miles due north on Broad St.
