St. Raphael's was the high school parish of Daniel Rudd, an African-American newspaperman who founded the first Black Catholic Newspaper in 1886, "American Catholic Tribune." [ 4 ] An Ohio Historical Marker honoring him was dedicated Dec 12, 2021.

The church as it appeared in 1914. In 1886 the territory extending from 34th to 44th Streets, west of 10th Avenue, was separated by the Archdiocese of New York from St. Michael's and Holy Cross parishes and formed into the new parish of St. Raphael, which was incorporated May 4 of that year.

[3]: 400 By the 1880s, large numbers of Catholics were living on Springfield's southeastern side, and preparations for a separate parish began with the purchase of three lots of land in 1881. A parish school building was begun in 1882, [2]: 505 and the new Church of St. Joseph was created a separate parish in the same year.
The St. Rose Roman Catholic Church Complex including the priory, the church, and a guesthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] The land for the priory was purchased by (then) Father Edward Dominic Fenwick , O.P. (later Bishop of Cincinnati) in July 1806 with money received from an inheritance.
