The Moorabool River is a river in Victoria, Australia, which runs for 160 kilometres [1] through several small towns such as Meredith, Anakie, and Staughton Vale. It runs into the Barwon River at Fyansford. It is believed that the name Moorabool derives from an Aboriginal word meaning the cry of a curlew or a ghost. [2]

It is located at the junction of the Barwon and Moorabool rivers. At the 2016 census, Fyansford had a population of 196. [1] Fyansford is one of the earliest places of settlement in the Geelong region. Fyans established his police camp nearby where the Moorabool could be forded—giving the name Fyan's Ford. [2]
The town is located in the Shire of Moorabool and on the Geelong-Ballarat railway line, 108 kilometres (67 mi) west of the state capital, Melbourne. At the 2016 census, Lal Lal and the surrounding area had a population of 476. [1] Lal Lal Falls and the Lal Lal Reservoir on the Moorabool River are to the north-east and east of the town. [2] [3]
Batesford is named after Alfred and John Bates who settled here in 1837 at a place where the river could be forded. The township was surveyed in 1854 and was originally named Hopeton after George Hope whose land it formed a part.
The township is located on the Lerderderg River, 89 kilometres north-west of the state capital, Melbourne, within the Wombat State Forest. Blackwood is in the Shire of Moorabool local government area and had a population of 387 at the 2021 census .
