Aside from these two institutions, the majority of the district is residential and includes many of Jacksonville's most historically and architecturally significant homes.

[6] It is home to Illinois College, Illinois School for the Deaf, and the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired, and was formerly home to MacMurray College.
