Impounded in 1952, Tenkiller is the only controlled impoundment on the Illinois River and can experience prolonged drastic lake level fluctuations. Situated in the Ozark highlands, Tenkiller is a deep, clear lake dominated by a shoreline with rocky bluffs and outcroppings.
Spawning depth can range from one foot to 10 feet deep in hard-bottom areas like rocky points and pea gravel coves. As summer sets in, largemouth bass head for the shaded areas, such as brush piles, docks, and creek channels, while smallmouth prefer rock piles and areas with a bit of current.

Known for its exceptionally clear waters, the reservoir has 130 miles of shoreline and is an ideal fishery for bass, crappie, white bass, catfish and sunfish.
The lake covers 12,900 acres (52 km 2) and has a shoreline of over 130 miles (210 km) in the Cookson Hills of the Ozark Mountains of Cherokee and Sequoyah counties, about seven miles (11 km) northeast of the town of Gore and 10 miles (16 km) from the intersection of I-40 and the Muskogee Turnpike.
