Meanwhile, Russia was quick to adapt the Krupp cast steel barrels. In 1863 it ordered 88 8 inch (20.33 cm) and 16 9 inch (22.86 cm) guns at Krupp, probably still muzzle loaders. In 1864 it tested Krupp 4-pounder field guns with two sliding wedge breech systems: the double breech and Krupp's simple breech.
"Krupp gun factory number 1," 1917 (Library of Congress); gun apparently meaning cannon or military artillery rather than pistol or revolver, note what appear to be cannon barrels suspended over the floor. The Krupp steelworks, or Krupp foundry, or Krupp cast steel factory (German: Krupp-Gussstahlfabrik [Guss+stahl+fabrik]) in Essen is a ...
In 1871, another 48 cannons made out of steel and equipped with a cylindrical-prismatic wedge mechanism were purchased and adopted as the Krupp Model 1871 guns which became the first steel cannons of Romania. [1] Unlike the Turkish carriage which was metallic, the Romanian guns had wooden carriages made out of elm or oak wood. [9]
The principal characteristic of Krupp guns was that they were made of steel at the time when everyone else still used bronze, cast iron and sometimes wrought iron. Alfred Krupp was introduced to the Bessemer process to mass-produce steel by his London agent and friend, Alfred Longsdon, in 1859–60. [5]
The Krupp barrel was a built-up gun. The inner tube had a breech, and was coiled with two other layers. In total, the barrel and breech weighed 425 kg. [1] The outer length of the barrel was 25.6 caliber, or 2150 mm. [1] On the inside the length till the breech was 1930 mm. The barrel had 24 grooves, increasing from 0 to 4 degrees.
In January 1867 the Prussian Navy ordered Krupp to design a 9 inch (96-pdr) gun barrel. [13] This was the 24 cm K L/20, which had a caliber of 235.4 mm. From this measurement we know that Krupp designed a gun with a caliber of 9 Prussian inch or Zöll, which explains why Krupp and others liked to refer to the 9 inch gun.
The barrel of the 15 cm RK L/26 was 3,850 mm long, i.e. 147.2 Prussian inches of 2.616 cm. The length of bore was 3,430 mm. Caliber was 149.1 mm. [2] The weight of the barrel was 4,000 kg or 80 Zenter, including the breech block of 141.5 kg. The barrel of the gun had 24 wedge grooves. The army version had a twist rate of 50 calibers or 7.455 m.
A change from black powder to smokeless powder propellant was addressed during 1888 by adopting a new barrel with the designation C/73-88. Later, a new nickel-steel barrel was introduced in 1891 to address premature barrel explosions by shells filled with picric acid. These were given the designation C/73-91. [3]
