The Gambia River runs a total length of 1,120 kilometres (700 mi). From the Fouta Djallon, it runs northwest into the Tambacounda Region of Senegal, where it flows through the Parc National du Niokolo Koba, then is joined by the Nieri Ko and Koulountou [] and passing through the Barrakunda Falls before entering the Gambia at Koina.
[4] [5] Niokolo-Koba National Park was listed as endangered in 2007 because of low mammal populations, management problems, and the planned construction of a dam on the Gambia River upstream. [6] It was removed from the endangered list in 2024 after Senegal had taken several measures to improve the situation. [7]
