This led directly to the production of the 6.9-liter IDI diesel. The engine is developed as a low cost, light weight diesel that fit where a V8 gas engine would, to try to convert their gas engine customers to diesel and to sell to Ford for use in F-Series light duty trucks and E-Series/Econoline vans.
The medium-duty 1930 A-series trucks received the all-new 278.7 cu in (4.6 L) FB-3 six-cylinder engine, with overhead valves and seven main bearings. This was complemented by larger versions of the same engine and was built until late 1940 (as the FBB), [ 7 ] the line-up being expanded downward by the smaller FA-series (later FAB) in 1933.
As a result of its inability to meet California noise regulations, the T444E was discontinued midway through the 2003 model year, replaced by the all-new 6.0L VT365. In total, nearly 2 million 7.3L Power Stroke V8s were manufactured for Ford at Navistar's Indianapolis, Indiana , plant before switching to the 6.0L.
The 4.5L Power Stroke was a V6 Power Stroke with the same turbo design as a 6.4L. The geometry of the engines is the same as the 6.0L minus two cylinders. The 4.5L and 6.0L share some of the same engine parts. The 4.5L came stock with 200 hp (149 kW) and 440 lb⋅ft (597 N⋅m) of torque.
