Yato's actual name is Yaboku, "Yato" being a name that a previous Shinki mistakenly gave him due to a kanji mix-up. He has been using the name ever since. The story revolves around a minor god named Yato, who is down on his luck and struggling to gain followers. Yato's dream is to become a well-known and revered god, but he does not have a shrine or any worshippers. One day, a high school girl named Hiyori Iki saves Yato from an oncoming bus, but ends up getting hit herself.
Yui visits the remains of a shinto shrine, and discovers Hiyori trying to move a huge tree branch off a Komainu statue. After succeeding, Yui gives her umbrella to Hiyori, before she follows her. They head to the emergency shelter and later taken into the care of Kiwa, a wise but kind old woman. Hiyori (ひより)

When Hiyori Iki saves Yato from being hit by a bus, she briefly has an out-of-body experience. After she is taken to the hospital, Yato introduces himself as a God to her. The next day, Hiyori begins having drowsy spells despite full recovery. Yato encounters a Toad Phantom, but Hiyori helps him escape.
