In typography, small caps (short for small capitals) are characters typeset with glyphs that resemble uppercase letters but reduced in height and weight close to the surrounding lowercase letters or text figures. Alternating caps, [1] also known as studly caps [a], sticky caps (where "caps" is short for capital letters), or spongecase (in reference to the "Mocking Spongebob" internet meme) is a form of text notation in which the capitalization of letters varies by some pattern, or arbitrarily (often also omitting spaces between words and occasionally some letters).
This text changes most letters, both upper and lower case, to small capitals, though half of the Greek alphabet is instead converted to lower case (namely the letters Α Β Γ Δ Θ Λ Μ Ρ Σ Φ Χ Ω and their accented forms apart from Ώ). With those exceptions, the text is hard-coded as upper case.
Block letters may also be used as to refer to block capitals, which means writing in all capital letters or in large and small capital letters, imitating the style of typeset capital letters. [2] However, in at least one court case involving patents, the term "block letters" was found to include both upper and lower case. [2]
The template uses the spelling "LORD", presented in customized small capitals.The style remains full capitals when the text is copy-pasted (unless into an application that accepts pasted style), and when it is displayed in degraded form in a non-CSS, text-only, or crude mobile browser, and when it is displayed as a text snippet in some search-engines' results page.
Avoid using ALL CAPS and small caps for emphasis (for legitimate uses, see WP:Manual of Style/Capital letters § All caps). Italics are usually more appropriate. Double emphasis, such as italics and boldface, "italics in quotation marks", or italics and an exclamation point!, is unnecessary.

That is, the part of a lower-case letter that is taller than the font's x-height. Ascenders, together with descenders, increase the recognizability of words.
