The following list of reptiles lists the vertebrate class of reptiles by family, spanning two subclasses. Reptile here is taken in its traditional ( paraphyletic ) sense, and thus birds are not included (although birds are considered reptiles in the cladistic sense).
This is a checklist of American reptiles found in Northern America, based primarily on publications by the Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles (SSAR). [1] [2] [3] It includes all species of Bermuda, Canada, Greenland, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, and the United States including recently introduced species such as chameleons, the Nile monitor, and the Burmese python.
In many books in this series (especially older editions), a number of the plates are in black and white. For examples, older editions of the Eastern reptiles/amphibians book had many black and white plates which were colorized for the current edition, [1] and the original 1934 Eastern bird book had only 4 color plates. [2]

This species, typically 4.1–8.9 cm (1 3/5–3½ in) long when mature, is characterized by its mottled black, brown and yellow pigmentation, and its long outer fourth toe on the hind limbs. The distribution of the long-toed salamander is primarily in the Pacific Northwest , with an altitudinal range of up to 2,800 metres (9,200 ft).
