I know that ATMs are by far the most economical way to obtain Euros, but I happen to have some cash that I want to convert to Euros for an. upcoming trip. Deposit that cash into your bank account or a new account you set up at a credit union while you're in the US. When you arrive at your first European airport, use a bank ATM (not Travelex).

You can buy Euros in the US but you will pay a premium. Here is a post from a few months ago that has some information as well: https://community.ricksteves.com ...
Your bank will explain that process. Yes, you can exchange US dollars for Euro here in the US, but first ask your bank to recommend a reputable company that will exchange the cash. If none, then deposit the cash in your account if you are happy with your bank's procedure for buying Euro with money from your account.
Independent ATMs may also try to confuse customers by presenting DCC in misleading terms. If an ATM offers to “lock in” or “guarantee” your conversion rate, choose “proceed without conversion.”. Other prompts might say “You can be charged in dollars: Press YES for dollars, NO for euros.”. Always choose the local currency in ...

I noticed on my trip last fall that more hotels, etc. were providing the option to pay in my home currency, but I always declined.
Euro Exchange at AAA. When we went to London/Paris in 2014, we exchanged money at bank ATMs in each country using our bank ATM card - no foreign transaction fee, but there was a flat fee each time we withdrew funds. Our local AAA offers Euro exchange at current exchange rate, no fees of any kind as long as you are exchanging $200+.
My simple conversion is multiply 1.40X the dollar amount in Euros = US dollars. Example 10 Euros = 14 USD 100 Euros=140 USD which is close. I round up, as it is easier.. The current exchange on 3/5/14 is 1 euros= 1.37 USD , 100 euros= 137.20. Yeman.

Sicily is a modern country with an extensive banking system and hundreds of ATMs since ATMs are there for convenience of the locals and not just US tourists.
NO. In the US the card issuing bank or company does NOT set the conversion rate or do the conversion itself. It is set and done by the card network. The card issuer sees nothing but the USD equivalent. The card issuer can then add in its 3 - 5% and whatever other fees it wants as a separate line item on your statement.
544 posts. The post office banks often are the best place. If that's not an option, you may look at exchanging your EU cash at your bank at home. My recommendation is to hang on the the cash and use it. If you don't find things to spend it on before you leave, save it for another trip.
