As such, North Carolina never developed a major port city as did neighboring states such as Georgia (Savannah), South Carolina (Charleston), and Virginia (Norfolk).

NC 9 meets SC 9 at the state border. SC 9 is one of South Carolina's most important state highways, although it is less so in North Carolina. [citation needed] NC 9 begins in Polk County south of the Green Creek community. NC 9 is co-signed with US 64/74A in the city of Lake Lure. This is about 20 miles (32 km) north of the southern terminus.

US 301 at the SC 260 intersection in Manning.. US 301 was established in 1932 as a replacement of the piece of US 17-1 north of Wilson and the whole of US 217. Thus US 301 initially ran from US 17 (now US 76) at Pee Dee northeast through Dillon, South Carolina, into North Carolina, and Virginia, ending at U.S. Route 1 in Petersburg, Virginia.
