The cathedral is located in a one-acre (4,000 m 2) lot on the southwest corner of the intersection of Eagle Street and Madison Avenue (U.S. Route 20).The terrain sloping gently westward from the Hudson River roughly three-quarters of a mile (1.1 km) to the east.
Other than one small group of rowhouses, the space across the Elk is all parking lots. The cathedral was designed in the shape of a modified Greek cross with short transepts and squared ends. St. Joseph's Church is a historic neo-gothic church edifice in the Ten Broeck Triangle section of Albany, New York's Arbor Hill neighborhood. The structure is considered a city landmark and an important part of the Albany skyline. [1] The church closed in 1994. The City of Albany placed the church for sale in February 2023. [2]
McCloskey moved his seat to the new cathedral when it was complete in 1852. St. Mary's primacy among Albany's Catholic churches has since then been purely historical. [15] The years before and after 1850 posed many challenges to the city. In 1848 a fire destroyed 600 buildings, and two more cholera epidemics struck Albany in 1849 and 1854.
