The election took place using the plurality block voting system, a form of first-past-the-post voting, with each ward being represented by three councillors.The candidate with the most votes in each ward will serve a four year term ending in 2027, the second-placed candidate will serve a three year term anding in 2026 and the third-placed candidate will serve a one year term ending in 2024.

Wigan (/ ˈ w ɪ ɡ ən / WIG-ən) is a town in Greater Manchester, England, on the River Douglas. The town is midway between the two cities of Manchester, 16 miles (25.7 km) to the south-east, and Liverpool, 17 miles (27 km) to the south-west. It is the largest settlement in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan and is its administrative centre.
The 2021 Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council election took place on 6 May 2021 to elect members of Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council in England. This election was held on the same day as other local elections. The election was originally due to take place on 7 May 2020, [6] but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [7]
