St. John Fisher University (originally St. John Fisher College) was founded as a men's college in 1948 by the Basilian Fathers and with the aid of James E. Kearney, then the Bishop of the Diocese of Rochester. It is now operated as an coeducational independent institution in the Catholic tradition (independent since 1968; coeducational since 1971).

Formerly known as the Lightower Conference Classic, the Roc City Hoops Classic is an annual collegiate men's basketball event. The event formerly featured a game played between two Atlantic 10 Conference NCAA Division-I member schools at Blue Cross Arena.

After he retired from playing in 1957, he remained as a coach with the Royals for one season, before he became the head coach of the St. John Fisher Cardinals college basketball team in 1963. He stayed in the role with the college for 24 years until his retirement in 1987.
