Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust runs Dorset County Hospital, an NHS district general hospital in the town of Dorchester, Dorset, England.The hospital is the hub of the district's inpatient facilities but community hospitals, formerly owned by the North and South West Dorset primary care groups are situated in the surrounding major towns and provide the 'spokes' to the central unit.
In October 2014, Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group launched a major review into the way healthcare is provided across the county. Plans included developing a "major emergency hospital" with 24-hour access to consultants at Royal Bournemouth Hospital, with Poole Hospital becoming the centre for planned care, according to plans agreed by the CCG in May 2015.
However just 4 months later the trust was given university hospital status, resulting in a name change to University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust. This was part of a plan with partners at Bournemouth University to "confirm the extremely close working relationship the hospitals and the university has enjoyed over many years". [8]
The second phase on the south part of the site completed in the mid-1990s at which time the who site became the Dorset County Hospital. The hospital was officially opened by the Queen on 8 May 1998. [1] An upgraded cardiac unit with new cardiology equipment opened in 2012. [2]

The hospital was founded in 1840 as the Dorset County Hospital and the first purpose-built buildings, designed by Benjamin Ferrey, were completed in 1841 south of Princes Street in the town centre.
