The Hummingbird Custom KOA model is a custom model, with back and sides constructed from highly figured koa wood. It has gold Grover mother of pearl keystone tuners, a custom in-flight hummingbirds peghead logo and a hummingbird floral tortoiseshell pickguard, all expressed in genuine abalone and mother-of-pearl.
The pickguard is one of the most distinctive features of the SJ-200. On standard models, a vine-and-flowers design is etched and painted into the pickguard, although custom-ordered guitars may feature a different design. The SJ-200 was the first Gibson with an engraved pickguard but was later followed by others such as the Dove and the Hummingbird.
First made in 1962 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, it was based on the Martin D-style dreadnought. [1] Both Gibsons have solid spruce tops and engraved pickguards. The Dove has solid maple back and sides instead of the solid mahogany used for the Hummingbird, and a longer scale length (25.5" vs 24.75").
The body was made out of laminated wood and it was made in six colors: Black, Ice Blue Metallic (583), Metallic Red (525), Cobalt Blue Metallic (587), Competition Orange (596), and Satin Silver. The Red and Orange bodies were made with black hardware; all other colors had chrome hardware. All Bullet Specials had a 1 ply black pickguard.
