Most sizes of VESA mount have four screw-holes arranged in a square on the mount, with matching tapped holes on the device. The horizontal and vertical distance between the screw centres respectively labelled as 'A', and 'B'. The original layout was a square of 100mm. A 75 mm × 75 mm (3.0 in × 3.0 in) was defined for smaller displays.
A slightly larger "cover plate", supplied with the wall-plate, or additional to it, then clips over the assembly, as an additional insulating barrier covering the deep set wall-plate mounting screws - which are "deep set" to prevent inadvertent human contact.
Wall plugs. A wall plug (UK English) also known as an anchor (US) or "Rawlplug" (UK), is a fibre or plastic (originally wood) insert used to enable the attachment of a screw in a material that is porous or brittle, or that would otherwise not support the weight of the object attached with the screw.
Expandable wall anchors with toggle arms. A drywall anchor, also known as a wall anchor, is an insert that, combined with the appropriate screw, can create a strong mount anywhere on a drywall panel or similar hollow wall. [1] A drywall anchor goes between the screw and the drywall, gripping the drywall much more effectively than a screw would. [2]
Molly fastener. A molly or molly bolt (often misspelled moly [1]) is a type of screw fastener that fastens objects to plaster or gypsum board hollow walls by providing an anchor to be lodged inside a hole and expanded once in position.
Originally, the mounting holes were tapped with a particular screw thread. When rack rails are too thin to tap, rivet nuts or other threaded inserts can be used, and when the particular class of equipment to be mounted is known in advance, some of the holes can be omitted from the mounting rails.
