Hypsiglena torquata, the night snake, is a species of rear-fanged colubrid. It is found from Mexico , through much of the eastern United States and south central British Columbia , Canada [ 3 ] [ 4 ] It is characterized by dark brown systematic blotches down its back and sides, a bar behind each eye, vertical pupils, and neck adornment.
These frogs are also called the Accra snake-necked frog. They are found across Western and Central Africa. One of its distinguishing features is the peptide secretion on its skin, which goes beyond toxicity and seems to inhibit aggressive behavior like biting and stinging from large ants.
At night, it hunts for frogs and their eggs and tadpoles; it is particularly known for feeding on those of the red-eyed tree frog. [2] [4] It swallows eggs, tadpoles, and small frogs alive but kills larger frogs with mild venom from its enlarged, grooved rear fangs. [5] It will also consume lizards, toads, salamanders, small fish, and mice. [6]
