In 1830, the German Theological Seminary of the Ohio Synod, later known as the Evangelical Lutheran Theological Seminary (ELTS), was founded to meet the need for educating pastors in the Ohio region. It generally used the German language in its education and materials for its first few decades.

Colaw received numerous ecumenical awards. He retired in 1988 and then became a professor of homiletics and Christian ministry at United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio from 1988 to 1999. He was the acting president of the seminary from 1995 to1996.
