The story follows Ken Kaneki, an 18-year old university student who barely survives a deadly encounter with Rize Kamishiro (his date who reveals herself as a ghoul and tries to eat him) when she gets hit by falling construction girders. He is taken to the hospital in critical condition.

However, after Tsukiyama's discovery of Kaneki's ghoul eye, and a raid by the CCG, Kaneki escapes alive. Kaneki meets Kimi Nishino, a human and girlfriend of Nishiki Nishio, who was previously injured by attackers. Nishino is later kidnapped by Tsukiyama, who later demands to eat Kaneki while Kaneki is eating Nishino.

Ken Kaneki is a young man who befriends the beautiful and enigmatic Rize Kamishiro, unaware that she is a ghoul. Rize reveals her intentions to eat Kaneki but by a stroke of luck Kaneki survives her attack but is mortally wounded.
