Joseph Fahys (May 28, 1832 – December 11, 1915) was one of the first U.S. watch case manufacturers. After emigrating from France, he went on to establish Joseph Fahys & Co., which at one time was the largest manufacturer of watch cases and one of the largest manufacturers of silverware in the United States. Solid Gold was created by Al Masini as part of his Operation Prime Time production unit, and was developed by Bob Banner.It was produced by Brad Lachman Productions for all eight of its seasons and Bob Banner Associates for its first four, after which Banner's company began producing Star Search for Television Program Enterprises, Masini's other production company.

The watch was an 18-size, full plate design. In 1869, the National Watch Company won "Best Watches, Illinois Manufacture" at the 17th Annual Illinois State Fair, for which it won a silver medal. [3] The company officially changed its name to the Elgin National Watch Company in 1874, as the Elgin name had come into common usage for their watches.
In 2000, Ronald, along with new business partner, Fenway Partners, bought Bruce out from the company for $54.1 million. [18] In 2010–2011, the company's sales were €246 million in total sales and €36 million in watches. [19] The company also got a new CEO, Frederic de Narp, formerly of the Cartier North America. He succeeded Tom O'Neill. [20]
