Brady is a city in McCulloch County, Texas, United States. Brady refers to itself as the "Heart of Texas", as it is the city closest to the geographical center of the state, which is about 15 miles northeast of Brady. [4] Its population was 5,118 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of McCulloch County. [5]
The Sixth Texas Legislature in 1856 formed McCulloch County from Bexar County, and named it for Benjamin McCulloch. [5] The Voca waterwheel mill was built in 1876. [9] The Brady Sentinel was established by D.F. Hayes in 1880 as the county's first newspaper. Later, it was absorbed by the Heart o’ Texas News run by R.B. Boyle. [5]

On the courthouse grounds is a Heart of Texas granite marker designed by Earl V. Finlay. The actual carving and inscription were done in 1958 by Brady native son Gary Bryson. Funding for the 7 feet 6 inches (2.29 m) monument was provided by the Brady Chamber of Commerce and the McCulloch County Commissioners' Court. [8]
