    That itchy bug bite you get when one of those little random common house spiders gets stuck in the sheets with you, is just a nuisance for a day or two. But that same exact bite, from that same exact spider, will completely paralyze a fruit fly and kill it within a minute or two. Spiders are awesome. I agree I don't want'em in my house.

    Ground squirrels are not common at all where I live. I only see them occasionally in a park near my neighborhood. I think it's a bit too dry here for them here. I do see lots of rabbits though. There are also plenty of lizards, snakes, scorpions, and spiders. I've seen some pretty big knarly spider lairs out in undisturbed rocky areas.

    The water is probably caught in a low point in the ductwork somewhere. 1/2 cup is not too much, so you could probably dry it out by turning the fan on and running the AC or heat for a while.

    As barking spider has stated, the easiest and best looking solution, since these are just painted hollow core flush doors is to add a small strip of wood to the bottom, sand, fill with water putty, sand, and paint. It is easy and should look fine. If you had fancier six panel unpainted doors this would be more difficult.
