A Democrat, Wexton was a member of the Virginia Senate from 2014 to 2019; she represented the 33rd district, which includes parts of Fairfax and Loudoun Counties. In 2018, Wexton was elected to Congress, defeating Republican incumbent Barbara Comstock with 56% of the vote. She was re-elected in 2020 and 2022.
