Cape Fear is a coastal plain and Tidewater region of North Carolina centered about the city of Wilmington. [2] The region takes its name from the adjacent Cape Fear headland, as does the Cape Fear River which flows through the region and empties into the Atlantic Ocean near the cape.
Bathhouses and dance halls were also built oceanfront on Freeman Beach, and that portion of the resort became known as Bop City. Seabreeze was a thriving resort up until the late 1950s. The downfall of the area began with the opening of the man-made Carolina Beach Inlet in 1952, which caused heavy erosion at Freeman Beach.
