Route 162 is a state highway in southern Connecticut running for 10.34 miles (16.64 km) from Milford to the West Haven–Orange town line. Because it is located along the Atlantic coast it serves as a more scenic alternate route to US 1 , where it both begins and ends.

It intersects with Route 34 in northern Orange 2.3 miles (3.7 km) from the south end and continues northward into the town of Woodbridge. In Woodbridge, it passes over the Wilbur Cross Parkway without a junction, then intersects with Route 243 1.1 miles (1.8 km) later and with Route 313 another 1.4 miles (2.3 km) after that.
The road continues past the Wilbur Cross Parkway for another 1.6 miles (2.6 km) until the intersection with Route 34 (Derby Turnpike) in the northern edge of Orange, where Route 121 ends. In Milford, Route 121 is known as North Street, while in Orange, it is known as Grassy Hill Road.
Because the New Haven segment had not yet been completed, motorists were directed to temporarily follow Route 34, US 5, and Route 10A. In November 1949, the New Haven segment, from Exit 57-58 to Exit 61, including the West Rock Tunnel opened. The entire parkway was a toll road when it opened in 1941.
