Richmond Hill has a historical connection to industrialist Henry Ford. [5] Ford used the town, formerly known as Ways Station, as a winter home and philanthropic social experiment, building the complex known as the Ford Farms along the Ogeechee River in the 1930s.
In the late 1930s, Henry Ford bought the property and began restoring it. The International Paper Company purchased the property from Ford's estate and gave it to the State of Georgia in 1958. The Georgia Historical Commission continued to restore the fort to its 1863-64 appearance.
Kilkenny is east of Richmond Hill, Georgia, situated at the southeast end of Kilkenny Road and the western shore of Kilkenny Creek. The property fronts the creek and overlooks tidal salt marsh out towards the St. Catherines Islands and Ossabaw Islands, with access to St. Catherine's Sound. A nearby tidal station is named for the Kilkenny Club. [6]
