"Take Up Thy Cross, The Saviour Said" is an American Christian hymn written by Charles W. Everest. It was originally a poem published in 1833 but was later altered to become a hymn. [ 1 ] It was then edited by English hymnwriter Sir Henry Baker for inclusion in the Church of England 's Hymns Ancient and Modern hymnal.

"Good Shepherd" originated in a very early 19th century hymn written by the Methodist minister Reverend John Adam Granade (1770–1807), "Let Thy Kingdom, Blessed Savior". [1] [2] [3] Granade was a significant figure of the Great Revival in the American West during the 19th century's first decade, as the most important author of camp meeting hymns during that time. [4]

The hymn remains popular, [1] and is included in several hymnals across different denominations, including The Song Book of the Salvation Army (1986), The United Methodist Hymnal (1989), The Baptist Hymnal (1991) and Singing the Faith (2011). The melody is credited to Dorsey, drawn extensively from the 1844 hymn tune, "Maitland". [1] " Maitland" is often attributed to American composer George N.
