Iyengar Tamil (Tamil: ஐயங்கார் தமிழ்) is a dialect of the Tamil language spoken mostly in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, as well as other neighbouring regions of South India. It is spoken by the Iyengar community, a sect of Tamil Brahmins whose members adhere to Sri Vaishnavism . [ 1 ]
Ramanuja. The Iyengar community traces its philosophical origins to Nathamuni, the first Sri Vaishnava acharya, [6] who lived around 900 CE. He is traditionally believed to have collected the 4,000 works of Nammalvar and other alvars, [7] the poet-saints of Southern India who were intensely devoted to Vishnu on both an emotional and intellectual plane. [8]
He collaborated with Pandithurai Thevar in promoting the Tamil Language. Mu Raghava Iyengar was a leading member of Madurai Tamil Sangam and helped edit the magazine Senthamizh (செந்தமிழ்) between 1905 and 1910. Mu Raghava Iyengar was appointed to the committee that worked on the Tamil-English lexicon/dictionary.
In 1938, Iyengar wrote a paper titled Valmiki and Tamil in Senthamizh monthly, which analysed Maharishi Valmiki's relationship with Tamil and whether Tamil could have been the spoken language throughout India during the Ramayana times. [6] His work Bharathazhwan Vaibhavam in the Senthamizh magazine was discussed in the Tamil literary circles.
