The derbies between the Club Africain (CA) and Espérance de Tunis (EST) start during the season 1923–1924, when the African Club joins the EST in second series (promotion 1): the first official derby, which takes place on March 23, 1924, at the Ariana on behalf of the fifth day of the championship of the second series, is won by the African Club (3-0).

Espérance Sportive de Tunis (EST, French pronunciation: [ɛspeʁɑ̃s spɔʁtiv də tynis]; Arabic: الترجي الرياضي التونسي, romanized: Attarajī ar-Riyāḍi Attūnisī), known as ES Tunis, and nicknamed “Mkashkha”, The Elder of Tunisian Clubs, The Blood and Gold Club and The Beast of Africa is a Tunisian professional sports club.
Tunisian clubs also have a share in the FIFA Club World Cup with four participations, three for Esperance in 2011, 2018, 2019 thanks to winning the African Champions League title in 2011, 2018, 2019 and the only participation of Etoile du Sahel in 2007, which at the time ranked fourth as the best result for Tunisian teams in the Club World Cup.

The club was founded in 1920 and its colours are red and white. Their home stadium, Stade Hammadi Agrebi, has a capacity of 60,000 spectators. The club currently plays in the Tunisian Ligue Professionnelle 1. Club Africain was the first Tunisian club to win an international trophy, when they won the Maghreb Cup Winners Cup in 1971.
