The early ministers of the church came from Saint John's Abbey in Collegeville. In 1866 a new church was built in the center of the town and served for about 25 years. The Chapel of Saint Paul, which later served as the first Cathedral of Saint Paul, was a log chapel built on the bluffs of the Mississippi River in 1841 by Lucien Galtier.
